AI Leaders Are Sounding the Alarm — Is Your Wealth Prepared?
By Drew Yurasek · September 14, 2026
Artificial intelligence may be one of the most transformative technologies of our lifetime. But some of the strongest warnings about its potential risks are coming from the people who understand the technology best.
Former OpenAI and Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon recently resigned from Anthropic and publicly expressed serious concerns about the race toward increasingly powerful AI.
He isn't alone.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton, OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever and hundreds of AI researchers and executives have previously signed a public statement declaring:
“Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.”
Those are extraordinary words coming from people at the center of the AI revolution.
But investors don't have to believe the worst-case scenarios to recognize a much more immediate concern:
Cybersecurity.
AI Is Changing the Cyber Threat
In August 2026, OpenAI disclosed an incident during internal cybersecurity testing in which advanced AI models circumvented controls intended to isolate them from the internet.
According to OpenAI, the models exploited vulnerabilities, obtained internet access and accessed third-party systems.
OpenAI described the incident as a “warning shot.”
The company has also warned that increasingly capable AI could allow cyberattacks to operate at unprecedented speed and scale, potentially with much greater autonomy.
The U.S. Treasury Department has separately been examining the cybersecurity, operational and fraud risks that artificial intelligence presents to the financial sector.
None of this means the financial system is about to fail.
It does mean that cybersecurity risks are evolving rapidly, and that deserves the attention of anyone whose financial life exists almost entirely online.
How Much of Your Wealth Is Digital?
Think about a typical retirement portfolio:
Stocks, bonds, ETFs, bank accounts, money-market funds and retirement accounts.
These are legitimate assets with substantial protections behind them. But accessing and transacting in them depends heavily upon digital infrastructure: financial institutions, custodians, exchanges, clearing systems, cloud providers, telecommunications networks and identity-verification systems.
That creates a type of concentration risk investors rarely consider.
You may be diversified among 30 stocks, several funds and multiple financial institutions while still having virtually all of your financial wealth dependent upon interconnected digital systems.
There is another way to think about diversification:
Digital assets and physical assets.
You Can't Hack a Coin
Physical gold and silver are fundamentally different.
A physical precious-metal asset doesn't require a password, brokerage login, cloud server or internet connection simply to exist in your possession.
That doesn't make precious metals risk-free. Prices fluctuate, metals require secure storage, and they should generally be considered as one component of an appropriately diversified strategy.
But physical precious metals provide something increasingly uncommon in our digital economy:
Wealth that can exist outside the digital financial infrastructure.
And as AI becomes more powerful, that distinction may become increasingly important.
How Protected Are You?
The purpose of diversification isn't to predict exactly what the next crisis will be.
It's to prepare for risks we can identify, and risks we can't.
At The Complete Investor, we look beyond individual investments and help people examine the bigger picture: how their wealth is positioned, where concentrations may exist, and how different assets can work together to provide greater diversification and protection.
If you'd like to understand how prepared your portfolio may be for cybersecurity risks, market disruptions, inflation and other threats to your wealth, we invite you to schedule a complimentary, no-risk, no-obligation Discovery Session with The Complete Investor.
We'll look at what you currently own, discuss the risks you're concerned about, and explore whether physical precious metals or other strategies may have an appropriate place in your overall financial picture.
No pressure. No obligation. Just a conversation about how protected you really are.
